Module 2: Psychological Coaching

This is a very intensive 2 day module consisting of theory, practical and assessment. The assessment is continual throughout the 2 days.

The course will continue to explore the role of the coach in the modern world will examine in detail some of the ’psychological’ approaches in the delivery of coaching. You will learn the differences between these systems and how to utilise these in your work. Each of the different approaches works on different principles and are often highly useful when someone is unable to move forwards with classic coaching methods.

We teach the questioning techniques required for the different systems and how to modify standard tools to fit them.

The Psychological Approaches

Solutions-focused Coaching
Focuses mainly on the existing abilities and resources and not on the shortcomings and problems that need to be redressed. The approach creates quite rapid change through the use of small manageable steps. Each of these builds on previous progress so compounds past successes.

Cognitive-Behavioural Coaching (CBC)
CBC focuses on connections made by the coachee between external events, their internal responses to them and the resultant actions that occur. It allows the coachee to recognise that the associations and responses to stimuli are within their own control when they are understood and consciously managed.

Gestalt Coaching
Focuses on the present. Living now is more central than dwelling in the past – or imagining a future divorced from the present. The process starts from the surface and follows the experience of each individual – not seeking out the unconscious, but staying with what is present and aware. Awareness is seen as curative and growth producing. The goal is to help individuals stay present with their experience. Staying present is remaining in the here and now. Grounding ourselves in the present is more healthful (effective) than going back to the past and getting lost in an uncertain future. Because of our grounded-ness, we accept emerging events as natural.

Transpersonal Coaching
Focuses on the coachee’s spiritual dimension. This approach is most effective for those wishing to develop an insight of their place in the bigger scheme of things. The coachee may feel the desire to explore a particular situation as a part of their broader purpose and meaning in life.

Each of these approaches will have situations where it is most effective, therefore it is best practice to be skilled in several so that you can offer the best coaching experience to your coachees.
