Compulsive Obsessive/Behavioural Disorder
Persons suffering from compulsive and or obsessive behaviour disorders are usually given little or no meaningful advice and guidance, even by some professionals. That which is proffered is often one sided, based on ignorance of the problem and lack of knowledge of the areas of help available.
OCB creates a massive challenge and with formidable difficulties for the sufferer, their families, friends and most therapists working in this area.
It is very difficult for a non-sufferer to understand the volume of distress caused by the OCB behaviour. Family members and friends frequently apply a simplistic rationality – “What’s the problem, just stop doing it”. “Pull yourself together and get a life”. This less empathic response has no meaningful effect and may actually make the sufferer worse! The problem can often be very debilitating and impacts on all areas of the sufferer’s life and relationships.
Simple definitions:
Obsession: a persistent or recurrent idea, usually tinged with emotion and frequently involving an urge towards some form of action, the whole mental situation being pathological.
Compulsion: an irresistible inner force compelling the performance of an act without, or even against, the will of the individual performing it.
