Sleight of Mouth Patterns of Persuasion

‘Sleight of Mouth’ Patterns of Persuasion – Reframing Beliefs

Module 1 NLP Master Practitioner

2 Day attendance. Investment and dates are at the foot of the page

It would be an advantage to have a working knowledge of NLP but it is not a prerequisite of attendance.

This intensive course is about changing beliefs – yours and those of others.

Try to answer the following questions, quite a few of you will find it difficult to do:

  • What is a belief?
  • How are they maintained in the brain?
  • How do I change a long held belief?

This course is about personal communication and changing personal beliefs. They are verbal techniques which may influence your beliefs or those of someone else about a particular situation or mind set.

After you have mastered these techniques you will be able to have significant influence over others.  The process centres on your ability to have ’compassionate engagement’, (empathy), with another person.

You will need to understand ‘where the other person is at and where they are coming from’. It is of utmost importance that you accept everything the other person is saying and their beliefs. Therefore, initially you will be asking many questions and listening intently to the answers given to understand their ‘territory’ and be able to read their map of it.

Perception vs. interpretation. Our personal perceptions and interpretations of any situation are different to those of other people. They depend on our total life experiences – therefore are based on our values.

Imagine; two people sitting watching football on TV. One is a football fanatic the other finds the sport pointless and boring. They will have totally different perceptions and interpretations of that situation.

Now; let’s take these two on an imaginary journey – they are whisked off ‘as if by magic’ to a beach. They are placed on the beach sat side by side on deck chairs unable to change their positions. One is facing the wonderful azure sea, blue sky and in glorious sunshine; the other is facing a precipitous cliff of loose and crumbling black rocks just a few feet away. Same beach two very different perceptions and interpretations.

I am relying on the fact that every person reading this will bring their own preconceived perceptions and interpretations of these two scenarios. Some of you will love football others will hate it. The beach one can be more complex; you may have a fear of the sea or open spaces therefore looking at the cliff is possibly the better option for you!

The concept I am striving to get across is that ‘Sleight of Mouth’ is not that I’m right and you’re wrong or vice versa. We are both right from our unique perspective and understanding. Taking this assumption to be a fact, we can develop skills to influence other person’s beliefs and see things differently – more from our perspective.

Remember, the purpose of using these incredibly persuasive language patterns is not to try and force other people to do what you want or think like you. It’s to open their minds to accept new concepts or possibilities.
